USA: NBC exceeds $1bn (€878m) in advertising revenue for the 2016 Summer Olympics

NBC Universal has exceeded the one billion dollar mark (€878m) in advertising revenue for its coverage of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, announced the US media conglomerate, on 29/03/2016. NBC Universal is the broadcaster, in the United States, of the Olympic Games -- including both the winter and summer editions -- from Sochi 2014 (Winter Olympics, Russia) through Tokyo 2020 (Summer Olympics, Japan), with these TV rights acquired on 07/06/2011.

This one billion dollar mark in revenue, which also includes the sale of advertising space on cable and digital platforms, has been achieved four months earlier than for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games

"The value of live, event programming is more important than ever to advertisers because of its ability to reach large audiences. The Olympics' ability to dominate prime time for 17 consecutive nights is unmatched. If brands want to reach viewers and their customers in the third quarter, they have to be in the Olympics," said Seth Winter, vice-president in charge of advertising sales for the NBC Sports Group, on 29/03/2016.
