UEFA: Successor to M. Platini to be elected at an extraordinary congress in Athens on 14/09/2016

On Wednesday 14/09/2016, the new president of UEFA will be elected at the 12th extraordinary congress in Athens (GRE), announced the UEFA Executive Committee, who met in Basel (SUI) on 18/05/2015.

The Executive Committee meeting was held ahead of the Europa League final between Liverpool FC (Premier League) and Sevilla FC (Liga BBVA), scheduled at St. Jakob Park in Basel, on Wednesday 18/05/2016 (20:45 CET). This took place nine days after the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, on 09/05/2016, to uphold the suspension of Michel Platini, who had been president of UEFA since 26/01/2007, however for only four years (instead of six). Platini announced his resignation the same day on 09/05/2016.

Michel Platini's successor will be elected for two and a half years, until the next ordinary congress in 2019.
