The Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, Liga BBVA) has become a global ambassador for the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Nubia (a subsidiary of Chinese ZTE telecommunications group), announced the company on 20/05/2016. The contract amount could rise, according to Chinese media, to €4m a year, with an extension option.

The Real Madrid striker, 31 years old, has launched an official account in Mandarin on the Chinese micro-blogging platform Sina Weibo, on 16/05/2016. He published a welcome message to new followers via a Nubia Z11 smarthphone.

Nubia put Portugese captain on a contract so as to access the 11.5 million fans that the Cristiano Ronaldo account has on Chinese social media, and thus compete with Huawei networks, another actor in the Chinese smartphone market, who chose the Argentine international Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona, Liga BBVA) as a global ambassador (with a three-year contract and an annual amount of €5m, according to Spanish media), on 18/03/2016.
