The Federal Assembly of all of French football, organised by the FFF, adopted - with 59.08% of the votes - the installation of a promotion/relegation play-off between the the team which finishes 18th in Ligue 2 versus the team which finishes 3rd in the National (French third division) from the 2016-17 season, on 28/05/2016.

This change corresponds with the installation of a promotion/relegation play-off between the team which finishes 18th in Ligue 1 versus the team which finishes 3rd in Ligue 2, as decided by the LFP on 14/04/2016. The LFP and the FFF will work together to organise "Une Semaine des Barrages" ("A Week of Play-offs") - based on the model of the English and German play-off formats - after the end of the regular season of the first three French divisions.
