Aleksander Ceferin, 48 years old and the president of the NZS, the Slovenian Football Federation, is a candidate for the presidency of UEFA, said the Slovenian Federation on 08/06/2016. He is the second person to announce his candidacy, after the Dutchman Michael van Praag announced his candidacy on 18/05/2016.

The the new president of UEFA will be elected at the 12th extraordinary Congress in Athens (GRE) on 14/09/2016, announced the UEFA Executive Committee on 18/05/2015. The deadline for the submission of applications is 20/07/2016, eight weeks before the elective congress. This election is necessitated by the suspension (since 08/10/2015) of Michel Platini (FRA), who had been president of UEFA since 2007, but is banned from all footballing activities for 4 years, which was made permanent by a decision of the CAS on 09/05/2016.

The Slovenian Federation says its president can already count on the support of 18 of the 55 federations affiliated to UEFA (32.7% of the members): Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Russia…
