Germany: Bundesliga domestic TV rights to Sky and Eurosport (€4.64bn in total for 2017-2021)

The DFL awarded the domestic TV rights to broadcast live Bundesliga matches for the 2017-2021 cycle to the audiovisual groups Sky Deutschland (pay-TV) and Eurosport (pay-TV), on 09/06/2016. Sky Deutschland retained its Saturday afternoon multiplex, as well as both is Saturday and Sunday schedules.

The first innovation of the deals is the fact that Eurosport, normally broadcast free of charge in Germay, has acquired the pay-TV rights for Friday night games. Second innovation: the e-commerce company Amazon gets the Bundesliga broadcasting rights on the internet and mobile platforms.

The DFL has now already obtained €4.64bn in revenue for the 2017-2021 cycle (€1.16bn per season), or 85% more than during the 2013-2017 cycle, for the domestic broadcasting rights to all the German professional football competitions (Bundesliga, 2.Bundesliga, promotion and relegation play-offs, and the German Supercup).

This amount has already moved German professional football up to fourth place with regards to audiovisual revenues generated by the European Top 5 countries, behind the United Kingdom…
