Spain: the professional leagues to be called LaLiga and LaLiga2 from 2016-17

"LaLiga will not have a single sponsor because it is our belief that the brand can be better served with several sponsors. The Liga Adelante will now be known as LaLiga2," stated Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish professional football league, on 25/06/2016.

Spanish football's first and second divisions have born the names the Liga BBVA and the Liga Adelante, respectively, since 2008-09 and until the end of the 2015-16 season. The Spanish bank BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) paid an annual amount estimated at €23.5m for the naming rights of the two divisions (Adelante is the name of a programme of offers and services for the bank's clients).

"Our desire is to have a global title sponsor for LaLiga," Javier Tebas had said on 14/10/2015, two weeks after the formalisation of the non-renewal of the partnership with BBVA. Beginning in 2016-17, the Spanish professional leagues will bear the names of LaLiga and LaLiga2 respectively.

The Spanish Professional Football League, formerly the LFP, has also known been known as LaLiga since May 2015.
