Ángel María Villar Llona, 66 years old, the senior vice-president of UEFA, is a candidate for the presidency of the European body, announced the Spanish Federation on 19/07/2016. The election that will appoint the successor of Michel Platini will be held at the 12th Extraordinary UEFA Congress in Athens (GRE) on 14/09/2016. The deadline for candidature applications is 20/07/2016, eight weeks ahead of the elective congress.

President of the Spanish Federation since 1988, Ángel María Villar Llona, as the senior vice-president of UEFA, has fulfilled the ceremonial duties normally assigned to the president since the suspension of Michel Platini on 08/10/2015.

Michael van Praag, president of the Dutch Football Federation and UEFA vice-president, was the first to announce his candidacy on 18/05/2016.

Aleksander Ceferin, president of the Federation of Slovenia, affirmed that he will also be running for the presidency of UEFA, on 08/06/2016.
