The creation of a "Argentinian professional football Superliga", a new body responsible for organising the new championship, was approved by 70 votes against 1 by the Argentinian Football Association (AFA), on 13/07/2016.

The Primera Division will comprise 30 teams (against 20 teams until 2014) and is expected to start on 19/08/2016. Each season, four teams will be relegated and two promoted so as to reach a total of 20 teams for the 2021-22 season.

Regarding governance, the Superliga will remain within the AFA, but it will have a separate directorate, composed of 18 members (12 from the Primera Division and 6 from the National B) as well as an elected president.

Club spending will be more controlled, and from 2017-18 indebted clubs will no longer be able to recruit new players.

  • Media rights (approximately €152m) normally funded, until 2019, by the State, via the project "el Fútbol Para Todos" (Football for All), the programme established by the government of Cristina Kirchner in 2009, should be transferred to the Superliga via the AFA, subject to approval by FIFA.
