Benfica to broadcast their league 2013-14 home matches on their own pay-TV channel

SL (Sport Lisboa) Benfica will broadcast their 2013/14 home matches in the Portuguese league exclusively on their pay-TV channel, Benfica TV, the club announced on the 28/06/2013.

Before his re-election in October 2012, Benfica's president, Luis Felipe Vieira, promised to internalise the club's TV rights. "This is an historical initiative, it means that Benfica became the first club in the world to fully exploit its TV rights," Vieira said.

So far, 70% of TV rights revenue for the Portuguese championship, estimated at €75m per season, were paid to the country's three biggest clubs: Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting.

In February 2013, the Premier League announced that Benfica TV had been awarded the exclusive rights for all 380 matches per campaign from seasons 2013-14 to 2015-16. The rights were previously held by the Olivedesportos agency.
