Euro 2016: TV audiences in the European Top 5 countries

Euro 2016 - the first ever edition with 24 teams and 51 games - hosted in 10 cities across France from 10/06 to 07/10/2016, was followed worldwide by 2 billion unique viewers and more than 6 billion people in cumulative TV audiences.

Each game was watched on average by 130 million viewers. The opening match (France - Romania, 2-1, Group A at the Stade de France on 10/06/2016) was watched by over 200 million people, or 30% more than the opening match of Euro 2012 (Poland - Greece, 1-1, on 08/06/2012), stated UEFA two days before the final, on 08/07/2016.

During this competition, the five countries comprising the major European television markets (Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom), each had a game of the country's national team which achieved the highest TV audience of the tournament in the respective audiovisual market, and which also recorded the largest TV audience since the beginning of 2016.
