Facebook: $4.4m (€3.9m) distributed to athletes (players and teams) for them to use Facebook Live

Facebook has spent $4.4m (€3.9m) on contracts with players, athletes, sports teams, and sports media for them to use Facebook Live, according to the American newspaper the Wall Street Journal on 28/07/2016. Facebook spent a total of $50m (€44.5m) on 150 companies and celebrities.

"Facebook Live", a live video streaming service, is only available to individuals (athletes, artists, politicians, actors...), if the Facebook account is certified.

The sports organisation that has received the most money from the social network is FC Barcelona (LaLiga Santander) with $1.03m (€919,164) between May 2016 and March 2017. Barça is only 18th on list of entities paid by Facebook. The leader is the website BuzzFeed: $3m (€2.67m). Real Madrid CF (LaLiga Santander) received $917,000 (€817,000), Arsenal FC (Premier League) received $349,000 (€311,000) - via the company that manages its media rights - and Manchester City FC (Premier League) received $221,000 (€197,000).
