Rio 2016: average of 2.91 million viewers in Germany for the Olympic Games on ARD and ZDF

The Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games drew, in Germany, an average of 2.91 million viewers on the public channels ARD and ZDF, from 06 to 21/08/2016, revealed these channels on 23/08/2016. This is less than during the London 2012 Olympic Games where the two public channels drew an average of 3.55 million viewers (but the time difference was only -1 hour in 2012, against -5 hours in 2016). But the ratings are better than those for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games (time difference: +6 hours), for which ARD and ZDF drew an average of 1.89 million viewers. 54.43 million people in Germany watched at least one Olympic programme for Rio 2016 on one of the two public channels.

The best audience recorded during the competition was for ARD with 8.55 million viewers on average during the semi-finals of the women's beach volleyball tournament (involving German pair L. Ludwig and K. Walkenhorst, who were later crowned Olympic champions) on Wednesday, 17/08/2016 from 22:00 CET, for an audience share of 28.7%.
