MLS: Minnesota United FC confirmed to play in the 2017 season and become the league's 22nd franchise

MLS has confirmed that Minnesota United FC will play from in the 2017 season on wards, and thus become the league's 22nd franchise, the league and the franchise announced in a joint press conference on 19/08/2016. Minnesota joins Atlanta United FC as expansion franchises for the next MLS season, beginning in March 2017.

"We have made great strides in the months since (the franchise's original) MLS expansion plans were announced, and look forward to making the jump to Major League Soccer. This next step is an endorsement of our great state, people, and values, and we look forward to jointly building this team as an important piece of our community," stated Bill McGuire, the majority owner of Minnesota United FC, on 19/08/2016.

The ownership group of Minnesota United, led by Bill McGuire, also includes Glen Taylor, owner of the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves franchise, and the Pohlad family, owners of the MLB Minnesota Twins franchise.
