"The men's Olympic football tournament, which features under 23's and some older players, is not a good solution. This tournament is like nothing. And it swells the calendar. Serious discussions are needed with the IOC," said Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, to the Swiss German newspaper Blick, on 28/08/2016.

In Rio (BRA), the men's Olympic tournament (16 teams, 32 matches) began on Thursday, 04/08/2016 and finished with the Brazil-Germany final (1-1, 5-4 on penalties) at the Maracanã, on Saturday, 20/08/2016. The women's tournament (12 teams, 26 matches) is open to all players regardless of age, and started on 03/08/2016. The final was contested by Germany-Sweden (2-1), at the Maracanã, on Friday, 19/08/2016.

Gianni Infantino indicated that he wants to invest more in the promotion of women's football and declared that "the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016 was good for the women's game with regards to media exposure," on 28/08/2016.
