Twitter: 46.91 million cumulative followers for the 20 LaLiga Santander clubs (September 2016)

The 20 clubs in the 2016-17 LaLiga Santander season have a cumulative 46.91 million followers on the social network Twitter, according to data compiled by News Tank Football, on 05/09/2016. This total makes LaLiga Santander the most popular of the European Top 5 Euopean leagues on Twitter, with an average of 2.34 million followers per club.

Real Madrid CF are the most followed Spanish club, with 20.49 million followers, up 292,000 (+1.4%) since August 2016. The Madrid club is the European club with the highest number of followers on its main Twitter account, and also the second club out of the Top 5 for followers gained in August 2016, behind Manchester United FC (Premier League, +360,000).

FC Barcelona are the only club in the Top 5 to have its main account (the one followed by the most followers) in a foreign language, since the Catalan club totals more followers on their English account (18.44 million) than on their Spanish account (10.16 million). Real and Barça have a cumulative followership of 38.93 million on their main Twitter accounts, which represents 82% of the total…
