Twitter: 42.24 million cumulative followers for the 20 Premier League clubs (September 2016)

The 20 2016-17 Premier League clubs have a cumulative followership of 42.24 million on the social network Twitter, according to data compiled by News Tank Football, on 05/09/2016. This ranks the Premier League second amongst the European Top 5 European leagues, behind LaLiga Santander, with an average of 2.11 million followers per club.

Manchester United FC are the most followed English club, with 8.68 million subscribers, up 360,000 (+4.3%) since August 2016. The Mancunian club has gained the most followers of any club in the Top 5 in the past month.

During August, Southampton FC (616,000 followers) became the 12^th Premier League club to exceed 600,000 followers (a mark surpassed by 60% of the Premier League), while this figure has only been surpassed by 17 of the other 78 clubs in the other four Top 5 leagues (21.8%).

With an increase in followership of 10.9% (from 137,000 to 152,000), Middlesbrough FC are the Premier League club to record the highest growth on Twitter between August and September 2016, but remains the least followed club in the English top division.
