UEFA: Aleksander Ceferin (SLO) elected president by Congress (42 votes to 13 for Michael van Praag)

Aleksander Ceferin, 48 years old, has been elected the president of UEFA at the 12th extraordinary Congress in Athens (GRE), on 14/09/2016. The 55 member federations have all taken part in the vote, and the Slovenian collected 42 votes against 13 for Michael van Praag (NED) in the first and only round of voting.

Aleksander Ceferin, a lawyer and president of the Football Association of Slovenia since 2011, succeeds Michel Platini (FRA), who had been the UEFA president since 26/01/2007, but has been suspended from any official duties in football since 08/10/2015. Platini was involved in receiving payment from FIFA of CHF2m (€1.54m at the time of payment) on 01/02/2011, for his work (between 1999 and 2002) in advising Joseph Blatter (SUI, then president of the FIFA. The duration of Michel Platini's suspension was reduced from six years to four by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 09/05/2016.
