"It is a great honour, but at the same time a great responsibility that comes with the confidence of the national federations members of UEFA. I look forward to working closely with you all, to promote, protect and develop football on our continent, ensuring that the European football family is always united now and in the future," said Aleksander Ceferin, 48 years old, elected the president of UEFA at the 12th extraordinary Congress in Athens (GRE), on 14/09/2016.

The 55 member federations all took part in the vote, and the Slovenian collected 42 votes against 13 for Michael van Praag (NED) in the first and only round of voting.

The mandate of Aleksander Ceferin will last until the first half of 2019, with the UEFA Statutes (art. 19, para. 3) providing for the election of the President at the Ordinary Congress held the year before the Euro (the next Euro, in 13 cities in 13 countries, will be in 2020). In addition, Aleksander Ceferin automatically becomes a vice-president of FIFA.
