"You will continue this noble mission without me. I would like to wish the new president every success. Friends of football, farewell," said Michel Platini (FRA), before the 12^th extraordinary UEFA Congress meeting in Athens (GRE) to elect his successor on 14/09/2016.

Michel Platini (FRA), UEFA president from 26/01/2007 to 14/09/2016, was suspended from any official duties in football since 08/10/2015. Platini was involved in receiving a payment from FIFA of CHF2m (€1.54m at the time of payment) on 01/02/2011, for his work (between 1999 and 2002) in advising Joseph Blatter (SUI), then president of the FIFA. The duration of Michel Platini's suspension was reduced from six years to four by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 09/05/2016.

"Be assured that I have a clear conscience, that I'm convinced I did not make the slightest mistake, and that I'm continuing the legal battle. I want to thank everyone in this room who had the courage and loyalty to support me during the past months," added Michel Platini in his farewell address to UEFA on 14/09/2016.
