Virginia Raggi, Mayor of Rome, does not wish to support the candidacy of Rome to host the Olympic Games in 2024, she announced, on 21/09/2016. The Italian bid for the 2024 Olympic Games should be abandoned after the statements made by the mayor of the Italian capital, who was elected on 22/06/2016.

"We have respected the Olympic and Paralympic rest break and now we are in front of you once again... It is irresponsible to say yes to this application. Say no to the cast iron Games! Absolutely not!... No to cathedrals in the desert... We do not wish to mortgage the future of this city," said Virginia Raggi, on 21/09/2016.

Giovanni Malago, CONI President, expressed his regret figuratively in saying that he was sorry to hear that the proposal had been "abandoned in the 30th kilometre of the marathon" and announced that the Italian National Olympic Committee will continue thier endeavour awaiting the official refusal of the city.

  • Besides Rome, there are three cities bidding to host the 2024 Olympics:
    • Paris, (France)
    • Los Angeles (United States)
    • Budapest (Hungary)
  • The IOC
