Germany: Sky Deutschland will launch skysport.de, a free sports site, in summer 2017

skysport.de, a free sports website, will be launched in Germany in the summer of 2017, announced the pay-TV group Sky Deutschland, on 14/09/2016. "This site will focus on video content and the best moments of our unaired TV rights portfolio on television. It will be free and financed mostly by advertising," announced Sky Deutschland.

"With skysport.de, we are creating a new digital platform for all sports fans and we are building, next to our exclusive live content, the Sky Sport News HD channel and our social media offerings, the fourth pillar of the Sky Sports brand. By focusing on high-quality video content, in the future, we will offer fans in Germany the best online sporting experience," said Roman Steuer, sports editor of Sky Deutschland, on 14/09/2016.

The announcement of the creation of the free website comes after the Sky Deutschland group said, in July 2016, that its pay channel, Sky Sports News HD, launched in 2011, would be available free of charge from December 2016 in Germany and Austria. This is a first foray into the free TV market for the Sky Deutschland group.
