"I believe there's a fracture, a 'divorce' between the fans and LaLiga. It's the complete opposite of what happens in England and Germany. Here, the stadiums are half-empty. The fans are really unhappy, angry, and we need to change that," said Alex Aranzabal, who served as president of SD Eibar (LaLiga Santander) from 2009 until May 2016, on 03/10/2016.

Alex Aranzabal announced on 28/09/2016, his intention to be a candidate for election to the presidency of the Spanish League, which should be held on 18/10/2016. This "snap election" was made necessary following the resignation of Javier Tebas from his post as LaLiga president on 21/09/2016, when his term was scheduled to end in 2017. Javier Tebas has been president of the Spanish League since April 2013, and announced in the wake of this resignation of his intention to stand for another term of four years as head of the Spanish League, until 2020.
