China: PPTV acquires Premier League broadcasting rights for 2019-2022 (€220m per season)

PPTV (Suning group), a Chinese platform for streaming on internet and mobile, acquired the broadcasting rights to the Premier League, in China, for the 2019-2022 period, according to the Associated Press on 17/11/2016. The amount of the acquisition for all 380 games per season could be $700m (€660m on 18/11/2016) for the three years of the contract, the highest contract ever signed with a foreign broadcaster of the English league.

Super Sports Media Group currently holds the broadcasting rights for the Premier League in China and Macao (2014-2019). The current contract is estimated at $20m per year (€18.85m), nearly 12 times less than the PPTV deal.

  • The Chinese conglomerate Suning officially acquired a 68.55% stake in FC Internazionale Milano (Serie A TIM Italian first division. 20 clubs. ), on 28/06/2016.
  • Manchester City FC and West Bromwich Albion FC (Premier League), as well as Aston Villa FC and Wolverhampton Wandereres FC (Championship, English second division), have seen Chinese investment into their capital over the last 12 months.
