Spain: justice condemns Rojadirecta (illegal streaming) for violation of intellectual property

Rojadirecta.me, a Spanish illegal streaming website hosted in Montenegro used for viewing sporting events live, has been ordered by the Spanish justice system to compensate the rights holders of these competitions, because of its violation of intellectual property, on 22/11/2016.

Seized by channel Gol TV and the broadcaster Mediapro, Rojadirecta must "immediately cease to provide internet connections, of any kind whatsoever, which provide access to live viewing or slightly deferred football matches," said Spanish justice, on Tuesday, 22/11/2016. Rojadirecta must also suspend the site and compensate rights holders for the harm caused. The amount of the damages is yet to be determined.

This judgment against the company Puerto 80 Projects SLU (based in La Coruña, ESP), which runs Rojadirecta "represents an important step to eradicate piracy in Spain," said Mediapro on 22/11/2016.

• Puerto 80 Projects SLU defends itself by stressing that Rojadirecta only hosts content contributed by users and still believes it removes illegal content quickly.
• The site has 20 days to appeal the decision.
