Bundesliga: League adopts a new model of distribution for the TV rights from 2017-18

The DFL validated the reform of the model of distribution of the TV rights to all German professional clubs for the 2017-2021 cycle, on 24/11/2016. This allows clubs, for budgeting reasons, to anticipate the amount of audiovisual rights revenue they can expect at the start of each season.

Beginning in 2017-18, the distribution of the domestic TV rights will no longer be based solely on the past five seasons (points awarded based on table position, and then weighted by ratio to the most recent season: 5 for the previous season, 4 for the season prior to that, on down to 1 for the season five years ago). This method of distribution will now be used for only 70% of the domestic TV rights. The income paid out in this matter will be in a ratio of 2:1 for the team with the most points to the team with the least points. Only this 70% of revenue will be distributed according to the 2:1 ratio, from 2017-18.
