Six years ago, on 02/12/2010, the FIFA Executive Committee of designated Russia as the host country for the 2018 World Cup, and Qatar as host of the next edition, in 2022.

"I am convinced that organising the World Cup in Russia will do much good in this part of the world. I also wish to congratulate the Federation of Qatar and thank all of the candidates for 2022. Thanks to the FIFA Executive Committee, the World Cup can explore new lands: Eastern Europe and the Middle East await us. I'm a happy president," stated Joseph Blatter, then FIFA president.

Four candidates (England, Belgium/Netherlands, Russia, Spain/Portugal) hoped to host the 2018 edition. Five countries had applied for 2022 (Australia, South Korea, Qatar, Japan, and the United States).

The troubling conditions of the dual designation of hosts, on 02/12/2010, and in particular the choice of Qatar for 2022, would later cause the worst crisis ever for FIFA since its creation in 1904.
