2016: G. Infantino and A. Ceferin, two forty year olds at the head of world and European football

• On 26/02/2016, Gianni Infantino (ITA-SUI), 45 years old at the time, became the eighth president of FIFA, during the extraordinary congress of the international federation, held in Zurich (SUI). He received 115 votes of 207 cast (55.5%) in the second round, 88 votes more than his opponent, Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (BHR).

Previously, Gianni Infantino was the general secretary of UEFA since October 2009. He had declared his candidacy for FIFA by the deadline of 26/10/2015 (four months to the day before the elections), after Michel Platini (FRA), the then UEFA president who had announced his candidacy on 27/07/2015, was suspended from any official duties in football since 08/10/2015, because of a payment made to him by FIFA of CHF 2m (€1.54m at the time of payment) on 01/02/2011 for duties performed (between 1999 and 2002) to advise Joseph Blatter (SUI), the then FIFA president.
