USA: MLS' Columbus Crew sold by Hunt Sports Group for record $68 million (€51.5m)

Major League Soccer (U.S. professional football league) franchise Columbus Crew (Ohio) and their Crew Stadium (25,000 seats) were sold by their current shareholder Hunt Sports Group to Precourt Sports Ventures, the club announced on the 30/07/2013.

Hunt Sports Group, a privately held investment and management firm’s sports and entertainment business enterprise held by Clark Hunt, created the Columbus Crew franchise in 1995, for a $5 million (€3.8m) expansion fee. The group then invested $28.5 million to build Crew Stadium, the first arena dedicated to soccer only in the USA, which was opened in 1999.

Precourt Sports Ventures, an investment company specialized in sports and entertainment and run by American businessman Anthony Precourt, has acquired the Columbus Crew for $68 million (€51.5m), which is a record for an existing MLS franchise.

The sale to Precourt Sports Ventures provides Hunt Sports Group with 5.8% annualized return figuring a weighted average investment in the team and stadium between 1995 and 2013.
