LaLiga: Rioja Alavesa (wine region) becomes shirt sponsor of Deportivo Alavés until June 2017

"Rioja Alavesa", a wine region of the province of Alava (one of three provinces of the Basque Country in Spain), has become the main shirt sponsor of Deportivo Alavés (LaLiga Santander) until the end of the 2016-17 season, on 23/01/2017. The agreement was concluded with the "Diputación Foral de Álava", the government of the Basque province.

This agreement applies not only to the league, but also for the Copa del Rey. Deportivo Alavés bore the "Rioja Alavesa" brand on it shirt for the first time in the quarter-finals of the Spanish Cup, against AD Alcorcón (Alavés advanced 2-0 on aggregate over the two legs), on 24/01/2017.

Deportivo Alavés were without main shirt sponsor since the end of the 2015-16 season, with the end of his contract with the Basque telecom group Euskaltel (2012-2016). "Rioja Alavesa" has previously been the main shirt sponsor of Deportivo Alavés during its campaign in the 2000-01 UEFA Cup, during which the Basque club reached the final, losing to Liverpool FC (4-5, with a golden goal at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, on 16/05/2001).
