UC Sampdoria (Serie A TIM) are the first Italian club to move into eSports, by recruiting the video game player Mattia "Lonewolf92" Guarracino, said the club on 23/01/2017. This launch into eSports is being done in partnership with Esports Academy, a Roman company specialising in the promotion and dissemination of electronic sports games.

Mattia "Lonewolf92" Guarracino is the six-time champion of Italy on the football simulation game FIFA. He will represent Sampdoria in tournaments dedicated to clubs which have developed their own eSports team using the FIFA game.

The club is considering various projects, including the organisation of a tournament, the "Genoa Open", dedicated to all fans of video games, the creation of an international competition with the participation of Europe's largest eSports teams, and the possibility of offering video tutorials of "Lonewolf92" on the official channels of Sampdoria, the club said on 23/01/2017.
