Major League Soccer : the Ref Cam was tested during the 2013 All-Star Game

The MLS (Major League Soccer) has tested the Ref Cam, a head worn video camera mounted on the referee's head during the 2013 All-Star Game, which featured a selection of the best players of the North American league and Italian side AS Roma (Serie A) on the 02/08/2013 (1-3). The images were broadcast live on American channel ESPN2.

The Ref Cam was developed by American company BSI (Broadcast Sports Inc). The HD wireless camera is equipped with a mini-transmitter. Components are installed through a special jacket worn by the referee and a headband.

"We are always trying to improve our broadcasts in order to put the viewer at the heart of the game. The Ref Cam is the perfect means to provide the audience with the live discussions between the referee and the players during the game," said Larry Tiscornia, vice president of the MLS in charge of broadcasting.

"We hope that this initiative will whet the public's appetite and that it will ask for the technology to get widespread during the MLS regular season," said Peter Larsson, BSI General Manager.
