"This year's campaign is proving to be fascinating so far, because we are seeing representatives of some European countries participating in this stage of the competition for the very first time," said UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) General Secretary Gianni Infantino during the Champions League play-off draw in Nyon, Switzerland, on the 09/08/2013.

"A special mention to FC Shakhter Karagandy - the first Kazakh representatives to have come so far. This quite clearly reflects the sporting diversity of the Champions League and, more importantly, it provides ample proof that there is a chance of football glory for everyone," he added.

The 2012 Kazakh champions will face Celtic FC (SCO) in the 2013/14 Champions League play-offs, which will take place on the 20-21 (1st legs) and 27-28/08/2013 (2nd legs).
