The audience measurement institute Nielsen acquires Gracenote, specialist in metadata

Nielsen has acquired Gracenote, a US company specialsing in the aggregation and use of metadata (data such as names, date, title, keywords, etc.; which are used to categorise other data) for the media and entertainment industry, announced the institute of audience measurement and market research on 01/02/2017. Gracenote will be integrated into the "Watch" division of Nielsen, and continue to be based in Emeryville (near Oakland, California, USA).

"With this acquisition, Nielsen gains access to the Gracenote data and technology that underpins the programming guides and personalized user experience around the consumption of video, music, and sports content. Gracenote provides reference information for over 12 million movie and television listings and 200 million music tracks, driving the interfaces of the major streaming digital media services, as well as the infotainment systems in over 75 million automobiles," stated the group.
