eSports: NBA first major American league to launch its own competition in 2018, the "NBA 2K eLeague"

The NBA, in partnership with Take-Two Interactive Software (editor of the NBA 2K video game series), will launch an eSports competition in 2018: the "NBA 2K eLeague", announced the professional basketball league on 09/02/2017. The "NBA 2K eLeague" will be the first eSports competition launched by one of the four major US sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA).

Each NBA franchise will have the opportunity to be represented, but initially only 8 to 12 teams will compete. The teams will compete in a regular season of 82 games, followed by playoffs. "The best players will take part in a league that will take place mostly in NBA spaces," said Adam Silver, the commisioner of the NBA, on 09/02/2017.

Players will be selected by a virtual draft system (one day event) organised by NBA teams and Take-Two Interactive Software. These selections will be broadcast on TV or posted online. Each NBA franchise will select five players to represent its team. "We want to make this as real as possible," said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, the parent company of 2K Games, on 09/02/2017.
