Sir David Clementi has been officially appointed chairman of the BBC board of directors for a term of four years (from 16/02/2017 to 15/02/2021), the British government announced on 16/02/2017. Sir David Clementi thus becomes the first chairman of this board which replaces the BBC Trust, the decision-making body of the group removed following the publication of the new BBC Charter on 15/02/2016.

Clementi replaces Rona Fairhead, who announced that she did not wish to renew as chairwomen of the BBC Trust at the end her term, in September 2016. David Clementi has held the position of deputy governor of the Bank of England, as well as chairman of the board of Virgin Money, a company specialising in financial services.

David Clementi had launched an independent audit conducted on the governance and regulation of the BBC in the discussions for the new charter, and in which he suggested dissolving the BBC Trust and proposed enhanced oversight of the BBC by Ofcom, on 03/01/2016.
