China: microblogging platform Sina Weibo becomes the "Official Social Network" of the NBA

The NBA has signed partnership, for China, with the Chinese microblogging platform Sina Weibo on 06/03/2017. Under this multi-year agreement, Sina Weibo becomes the "Official Social Network" of the North American basketball league in China, and will broadcast highlights and summaries of NBA games as well as exclusive content on its platforms.

Sina Corp, the parent company of this microblogging platform, had lost its status as the exclusive digital partner of the NBA in China to its rival Tencent (via the platforms of QQ.com) since 01/07/2015 and for five years, the NBA announced on 30/01/2015. Tencent then expanded its broadcasting rights, in China, for the last four years of the contract, to all media rights to the NBA in China, including the broadcasting of 1200 games per season, according to Chinese media on 25/08/2016.

  • The 2017 Super Bowl (the final of the NFL National Football League, the professional league of American football in the USA. ), New England Patriots - Atlanta Falcons (34-28), was streamed live via Sina Weibo platforms on 06/02/2017.
