FFA (Football Federation Australia) has become a full member of the AFF (South-East Asia Football Federation), the Australian federation announced on the 26/08/2013. Its admission was decided after an unanimous vote by the eleven member associations of AFF.

Australia joined the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) on the 01/06/2006 as a "guest member". The selection is now involved in all official competitions organized by the South-East Federation.

"Football Federation Australia is honoured to be admitted to the ASEAN Football Federation. We look forward to being an active member, and to contributing to the ongoing development and success of football in our region," said David Gallop, FIFA general secretary, on the 26/08/2013. AFF is one of four regional groups of the football continental organization.

Australia qualified for the 2014 World Cup, participating in the Asian zone qualifiers. The country is also hosting the Asian Cup in 2015.
