"The financial results for this pivotal year are reassuring, with 76% of forecast revenue for the 2015-2018 cycle already contracted and an estimated positive net result of $100m at the end of the period," said FIFA in publishing its 2016 Financial Report on 07/04/2017.

"This is reflected in this year’s Financial Report as FIFA has been early to adopt the new revenue recognition standard IFRS 15. This method more accurately reflects the organisation’s income pattern over a four-year World Cup cycle, in which three years of steady outgoings are typically offset by the revenue of the fourth," said the international federation.

"The net result reported for 2016 amounted to -$369 million, whereas the operating cash flow was positive at $149m. While a negative result is also expected in 2017, a significant surplus is foreseen in 2018, the year of the World Cup, leading to a positive result over the four-year cycle in the range of $100m," added FIFA.
