Lucas Neill has been appointed ambassador for the 16th edition of the Asian Cup, on the 27/08/2013. The choice of the Australian international player (92 caps, 1 goal) takes place 500 days before the beginning of the competition, held for the first time in Australia, from the 09 to the 31/01/2015.

"I have long dreamed of a football event this big coming to Australian shores, said Lucas Neill on the 27/08/2013 I feel very proud and deeply honoured. It’s like wearing the captain’s armband, but never having to take it off," he added. This is the third time Australia will participate in the Asian Cup after reaching the quarterfinals in 2007 and the final in 2011.

FFA (Football Federation Australia) joined the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) on the 01/01/2006, after being a member of the OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) from 1966 to 2006. The Australian Federation also became a full member of the FFA (South-East Asia Football Federation), on the 26/08/2013.
