The virtual reality sector will generate $7.2bn in revenues (about €6.7bn) worldwide at the end of 2017, of which $4.7bn (€4.4bn) will come from the sales of virtual reality headsets, according to study on virtual reality published by Greenlight Insights, an institute of technology studies, on 11/04/2017. This market is expected to reach $74.8bn (€69.9bn) in revenues in 2021, the institute said.

"We saw mixed results in the global VR industry in 2016— initial sales volume by some high-end manufacturers didn't quite live up to the hype, while PlayStation VR, Samsung Gear VR, and low-cost headsets continued to gain traction. There are turbulent times ahead, but our analysis points to VR achieving critical mass in many markets by 2019, building to a considerable global marketplace five years from now," stated Clifton Dawson, CEO of Greenlight Insights, on 11/04/2017.

  • The study "2017 Virtual Reality Industry Report" was produced by Greenlight Insights in partnership with the specialised news website Road to VR, the Chinese firm iResearch, and the Japanese firm MoguraVR.
