CONMEBOL: 16 teams to take part in Copa America 2019 in Brazil, with six invited national teams

16 teams will compete in the Copa America, the South American Continental Cup, for the 2015 edition of the CONMEBOL competition, announced at the 67th Ordinary Congress of the body in Santiago (Chile) on 26/04/2017.

Since the South American Confederation only has 10 member countries, six non-CONMEBOL teams will be invited to the tournament. From 1993 to 2015, the Copa America competed with 12 teams, each time with two non-South American nations invited. Mexico, Costa Rica, the United States, Honduras, Jamaica, and Japan thus participated in the Copa America at various time between 1993 and 2015.

Several South American media outlets indicate that the six guest places for the 2019 edition will be distributed among member countries of CONCACAF, AFC, and UEFA. Up to four European teams could compete in Copa America, with the names of France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal already being mentioned.
