"Spanish football lost €369m (-10%) due to piracy in 2016, with a total of 122 million matches watched via illegal streaming (-13.4%) in approximately 10% of Spanish households during the year," states a report from GfK presented jointly by the CCEC (Coalition of Creators and Content Industries) and LaLiga on 25/04/2017.

In 2015, the report said that Spanish football "lost €410m due to piracy, with a total of 141 million matches watched via illegal streaming."

"We've seen how supporters are beginning to develop an awareness that piracy is detrimental to their clubs and other parties. In the football industry, online piracy levels dropped from 21% to 18% between 2015 and 2016 in terms of the number of users, but we've identified that there are other tools that these individuals are starting to use to gain illegal access to football broadcasts," said Javier Gomez, corporate managing director of LaLiga, on 25/04/2017.

2016: Loss of profit of €1.783bn for the six content areas concerned by piracy

  • 78% of access to illegal content was done through the internet and search engines in 2016.
