Premier League: €745m spent on the transfer market, 28% more than the previous season

20 Barclays Premier League clubs have spent a record amount of €745m on the transfer market, which ended at midnight on the 02/09/2013. This total represents a 28% increase compared to the €580m spent during the previous season. The previous record was set at €588m in the 2007/08 season.

English clubs spent €165.5m during the last day of the transfer window, a 27% increase compared to the €130m in 2012/13. Among the players transferred in extremis, Belgian international Marouane Fellaini, who moved from Everton to Manchester United for €32m, on the 02/09/2013.

Tottenham is the club that purchased the most (€121.8m) and also sold the most (€127m) in the Premier League. The sale of Welsh player Gareth Bale for €91m to Real Madrid is the European record for the 2013 transfer window, and the second highest in history.

• €580m were spent to acquire players from foreign Leagues, or 78% of total transactions.
