Media: BSkyB to test 4K transmissions during West Ham-Stoke City fixture

West Ham-Stoke City (0-1, third matchday of the Premier League) fixture, on the 31/08/2013, is the first live UK event, to be broadcast in "4k", specialized media indicated on the 02/09/2013.

4K, or "Ultra HD" is a quality of image which features four times the resolution of traditional Full-HD, that is to say 3840 (width) x 2160 (height) pixels, or 8,3 megapixels, as opposed to 2.1 megapixels (1920 x 1080) for Full-HD technology.

BSkyB filmed the match and transmitted it over a Eutelsat satellite to its studio facility in West London for a private screening. The operation required the use of specifically designed cameras, servers and OB (outside broadcasting) van, in collaboration with Sony and Telegenic companies. Image transmission was ensured by four synchronous full HD feeds operated by Ericsson. The fixture was broadcast on a Sony Ultra HD 84 inches (or 213 cm diagonal )TV, worth 25,000 pounds (€ 29,600). Sony sells a 55 inches (139 cm diagonal) version of the TV, for € 3,999.
