Media: Japanese TV channel NHK to test 8K technology in Brazil before the 2014 World Cup

Japanese public broadcaster NHK is currently testing "8K" retransmission technology in Brazil, in partnership with Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo, specialized media and daily newspaper O Globo announced, on the 02/09/2013.

The TV channel wants to make sure that Internet transmissions networks are robust enough to be able to deliver 8K images from Brazil to Japan in readiness for the 2014 World Cup (from the 12/06 to the 13/07/2014) and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (from the 05/08 to the 21/08/2016).

8K technology offers a quality of image which features 16 times the resolution of traditional Full-HD, that is to say 7680 (width) x 4320 (height) pixels, or 33.2 megapixels, as opposed to 2.1 megapixels (1920 x 1080) for Full-HD technology.

"What you see on TV nowadays are not the true colors," said Norihiko Ishii, engineer at NHK technology research laboratory, during the 8K presentation at an open house in Tokyo (Japan) on the 28/05/2013. The Japanese TV channel has an annual budget of €56m dedicated to research and development.
