The Irishman Noel Curran will be appointed as the director general of the EBU from September 2017, announced the union on 29/05/2017. He will replace Ingrid Deltenre, who has been the head of the EBU since 2010.

Prior to joining the European Broadcasting Union, Noel Curran was the general manager of the Irish public broadcasting group RTÉ from 01/02/2011 to May 2016. Having joined RTÉ in 1992, he was a reporter, editor-in-chief, and then an executive director of the Irish group from 2003 onwards.

"Noel was the candidate of choice in what was an extremely strong list of candidates. He impressed us with his sound public service values, his operational experience, and his understanding of the public service media ecosystem within today's rapidly evolving media environment. His leadership experience as director general of RTÉ will be invaluable as the EBU moves towards the next chapter in its history. I am confident he will do a very good job for the EBU, for all our members, and for public service media," said Jean-Paul Philippot, president of the EBU, on 29/05/2017.
