Tokyo (JAP): a €62m application to win the 2020 Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has appointed Tokyo as host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics on the 07/08/2013. The Japanese capital has prevailed over the other two candidate cities, Istanbul and Madrid, after two rounds of voting. Tokyo beat the Turkish capital in the final round by 60 votes against 36.

Tokyo spent €62m in communication campaign to support its candidacy. 51% (€31.6m) were financed by private investors and 49% (€28.4m) by the city of Tokyo. Istanbul and Madrid respectively had a €42m and €22.7m to €26.5m budget for their campaigns.

Work will be done to host the competitions, and should represent an investment of €2.9bn for Tokyo. Japan hopes to generate a 0.5% increase of its GDP (€32.1bn) by organizing the competition. The 2012 Games in London could have cost more than four times that amount, approximately €13bn.
