Attendance: 29,318 spectators per game and fill rate of 78% in the Top 5 leagues in 2016-17

The 98 clubs in the European Top 5 leagues for the 2016-17 season recorded an average attendance of 29,318 spectators per game, a decrease of 2% compared to 2015-16 (29,915 spectators per game). However, the average fill rate of these Top 5 clubs was 78% in 2016-17, an increase of 3% compared to 2015-16.

With an average of 41,492 spectators per game in 2016-17, the Bundesliga remains the best Top 5 league in terms of attendance, despite an average attendance down 4.2% compared to 2015-16 (43,325). This is due in particular to the relegation of VfB Stuttgart in 2016 (the club averaged 52,281 spectators per game in 2015-16 at the 60,449 capacity Mercedes-Benz Arena) and the promotion of SC Freiburg (23,959 spectators per game in 2016-17 at the Schwarzwald-Stadion, 24,000 capacity). Both Stuttgart and Hannover 96 (which plays at the 49,200 capacity HDI-Arena) have been promoted back to the Bundesliga after a one-season absence, thus meaning the Bundesliga will have an increased overall stadium capacity in 2017-18.
