"We have agreed on how the international calendar should be treated. If there is any change in the future - and there are no Saturday matches now apart from the final - it will have to be in agreement with the EPFL. The current calendar is the starting point," said Lars-Christer Olsson, the chairman of EPFL, after the Extraordinary General Assembly of the the association of European Professional Football Leagues in Geneva (SUI) on 06/06/2017.

The Professional Leagues fear that UEFA will schedule European cup matches during the weekend, starting from the quarter-finals, in direct competition with the domestic leagues they organise. Real Madrid CF (LaLiga Santander) and Juventus (Serie A TIM), the 2017 Champions League finalists (Real won 4-1 on 03/06/2017) would be in favour of this change, as well as FC Barcelona (LaLiga Santander).

The EPFL did not reject the idea of organising domestic league matches during the mid-week slots of the European cups. Some domestic leagues, such as the Premier League, have even begun to do so.
